Bonding with the unborn baby email series

Bonding with your baby is the continuation of something that started a long time ago…

Your relationship with your child (or lack of it) starts before conception, influencing the child’s development in many ways. It doesn’t happen by magic – during pregnancy the unborn baby is sharing the mother’s bloodstream, which simply put, can either be a cocktail of love, or of stress. In the womb, your baby can touch, taste, smell, see and hear. Your unborn baby is a conscious participant in what’s going around them, already forming their understanding about the world they are coming into.

As a psychologist specialising in supporting secure parent-child relationships I dream about the world in which emotional wellbeing of every pregnant parent is taken as seriously as their physical wellbeing.

Ideally, every pregnant parent would be asked a question: ‘How do you feel about being pregnant?’ And their answer would be listened to, received in all of its fullness.

I wish that every pregnant parent had enough resources and support to get to the place where they can say from the bottom of their heart: ‘I am overjoyed to welcome this new person into my life.’

Looking after your emotional wellbeing during pregnancy and nurturing the emotional connection with your unborn baby sends your baby the message that they’re coming to a safe, abundant world and that their needs matter and will be meet. Most babies trust this to be true.

It is not a doom-and-gloom message. Your sensitive and attuned care after birth can mitigate the effects of stress experienced during pregnancy, and strengthen your child’s sense of security.

So, whilst it is never too late to nurture your relationship with your child, building a solid foundation from the very beginning of your parenting journey will make it easier and more enjoyable, for all of you.

I offer more information and practical suggestions in a free email course ‘5 Heartwarming Ways to Bond with Your Unborn Baby’.
